Pool Evaporation Calculator

How It Works

The Pool Evaporation Calculator is an innovative and user-friendly online tool designed to assist pool owners in understanding and managing the evaporation rates of their pools. By providing a few simple details about their pool, users can receive accurate estimations of daily water loss due to evaporation, empowering them to maintain optimal water levels and ensuring the longevity and health of their swimming pool. Here’s a guide on how it works:

Select Pool Type: Start by choosing your pool type—indoor or outdoor. This selection tailors the calculation process to consider environmental factors specific to each pool type, such as wind speed and exposure for outdoor pools, or controlled environments for indoor pools.

Input Pool Dimensions and Conditions:

  • For Indoor Pools, input the surface area of your pool in square feet, the wind speed above the pool in miles per hour (a factor that significantly affects evaporation rates), and the ambient temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.
  • For Outdoor Pools, specify the pool’s surface area and select the pool’s type from the dropdown menu (e.g., Residential, Hotel, Public). Different types of pools have varying activity levels and exposure, affecting evaporation rates.

Activity Factor Adjustment: The calculator automatically adjusts the evaporation rate calculation based on the type of outdoor pool selected. This takes into account the expected usage pattern and environmental exposure, offering more tailored and accurate results.

Calculate and View Results: Once all the necessary information is provided, click the “Calculate” button. The calculator uses the entered details to compute the daily evaporation rate, presenting the result in gallons per day. This valuable insight helps pool owners make informed decisions about water top-up frequencies and overall pool water management.

Understanding Your Results: The evaporation rate displayed offers a clear indication of how much water your pool loses to evaporation each day. This information is crucial for scheduling regular water additions to maintain safe and enjoyable water levels, as well as for planning water usage and budgeting for pool maintenance costs.

The Pool Evaporation Calculator simplifies what can be a complex and often overlooked aspect of pool maintenance. By using this tool, pool owners can not only conserve water and save on maintenance costs but also contribute to environmental sustainability by efficiently managing their pool’s water resources.

General Rule Of Thumb

Swimming pools are a hallmark of leisure and luxury, offering a refreshing escape during the sweltering days of summer. Yet, owning a pool comes with its set of challenges, notably water evaporation, a natural process that can lead to significant water loss. Understanding and managing evaporation is crucial not only for maintaining your pool’s health but also for conserving water and saving on costs. This comprehensive guide dives into the science of pool evaporation, offering practical methods to measure, estimate, and reduce water loss.

So How Much Water Does a Typical Pool Lose?

The typical American in-ground pool is 14 feet by 28 feet in size, with a depth range of 4.0 to 6.5 feet. A swimming surface area of 392 square feet is the result of this. Using the aforementioned equations and the conditions from an average Arizona summer day, I estimate the following figures in the picture above.

Comparison of Methods on A Small Pool

We conducted our own experiment, and we compared the findings with the answers to the three equations above and the findings from an evaporation map. Over the course of a week, a small pool with an eight-foot diameter lost roughly 1.4 inches of water.

The evaporation rate for my backyard in Phoenix, Arizona is summarized in the table above. The parameters for the equations were established using information from our weather reports.
